Strep Throat

What is strep throat?

Strep throat is an infection that affects the throat and tonsils. This infection is caused by a certain type of bacteria. Some of the most common symptoms of strep include:

  • A sore throat, especially one that comes on quickly
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Stomach ache
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting

Sometimes, you can determine if a sore throat is strep by performing a visual inspection of the throat. Strep is marked by reddened, swollen tonsils, little red spots on the roof of the mouth, or patches of white in the throat.

How do people get strep?

Strep spreads, often all too quickly. When someone is sick with strep throat, they carry the bacteria that causes it with them. They can then spread this bacteria by sneezing or coughing, releasing the bacteria into the air and nearby surfaces.

This makes strep outbreaks especially common among kids. Once a single student in the classroom has strep, it’s easy for the bacteria to spread to other children.

To help your kids defend against this sickness, encourage them to wash their hands regularly and to avoid sharing cups with other kids.

How is strep treated?

Although strep can be a painful, unwelcome condition, it’s very treatable. That’s because the bacteria that causes strep can be killed with specific antibiotics.

If you think you or one of your kids has strep throat, visit Ayman Care Primary & Urgent Care as soon as possible.

Dr. Khan offers a fast, accurate diagnosis so he can start you with the right antibiotics to kill the bacteria and get rid of strep throat. Not only do these antibiotics help patients feel better and heal faster, but they also minimize the spread of the strep bacteria to other people.
