What are allergies?

Allergies are your body’s immune response to certain substances, called allergens. In most cases, your immune system reacts to a health threat (like infectious bacteria).

In the case of allergies, though, your body is actually enacting an improper immune response. It thinks the allergen poses a threat so it responds with allergic symptoms.

There are a number of different types of allergies. Some people experience allergies when they’re exposed to certain things in the air. Others get allergies when their skin comes into contact with certain materials or when they eat certain foods.

Some of the most common allergens include:

  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Pet dander
  • Insect stings
  • Nickel
  • Latex
  • Mold spores
  • Specific foods (e.g., tree nuts)
  • Specific medications (e.g., penicillin)

And some of the most common allergic symptoms include:

  • Itching of the eyes, ears, nose, or throat
  • Runny nose
  • Rash or hives
  • Upset stomach
  • Swelling at the contact site

Some allergies, especially allergies to some foods and insect stings, can cause anaphylaxis. This allergic reaction can be life threatening. It’s characterized by trouble breathing, vomiting, and skin rashes. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention right away.

How do I know what’s causing my allergies?

That’s part of the challenge of allergies. If you’re allergic to an airborne allergen, it can be all but impossible to narrow down your exposure enough to accurately diagnose your allergy.

That’s why Dr. Khan offers allergy testing. This diagnostic tool allows him to hone in on the allergen that’s causing you problems. Then, he works with you to develop a treatment plan that relieves your symptoms.

How are allergies treated?

Dr. Khan tailors your allergy treatment to your specific allergy, your lifestyle, and your preferences.

Some people find that taking an allergy medication, particularly during allergy season, helps them fend off symptoms and reclaim their quality of life. Others notice the biggest difference when they make lifestyle choices, like avoiding their allergen if it’s a food or specific material.

You don’t have to figure out which allergy treatment works best for you on your own. Dr. Khan is available to develop a personalized allergy treatment plan to give you relief from your symptoms.
